Description

Apoquel® (oclacitinib) 5.4 mg tablets are a prescription medication designed to control pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis and manage atopic dermatitis in dogs aged 12 months and older. As a Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitor, oclacitinib selectively inhibits cytokines involved in the itch and inflammatory pathways, providing targeted relief without the side effects commonly associated with steroids. Clinical studies have shown that Apoquel begins to alleviate itching within 4 hours, with complete control achieved within 24 hours. The recommended dosing regimen involves administering 0.4 to 0.6 mg/kg orally twice daily for up to 14 days, followed by once-daily maintenance dosing. Apoquel can be given with or without food. Common side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Due to its immunomodulatory effects, Apoquel should not be used in dogs with serious infections or those under 12 months of age. Regular veterinary monitoring is advised to ensure safety and efficacy during treatment.
