Sporimune® (cyclosporine capsules) USP Modified 25 mg is designed to manage atopic dermatitis in dogs, a chronic skin condition characterized by itching and inflammation. As a systemic immunosuppressant, cyclosporine inhibits T-cell activation, thereby reducing the immune response that leads to skin irritation. The initial recommended dose is 5 mg/kg/day, administered orally once daily for 30 days. After this period, the dosing frequency may be tapered to every other day or twice weekly to maintain the desired therapeutic effect. Sporimune should be given at least one hour before or two hours after meals. Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and gingival hyperplasia. Use with caution in dogs with diabetes mellitus or renal insufficiency, and avoid use in dogs with a history of neoplasia or hypersensitivity to cyclosporine. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in dogs less than 6 months of age or weighing less than 4 lbs. Regular veterinary monitoring is recommended during treatment.
